6:00-7:00 Potluck – Please come for dinner at 6:00.  Bring anything that helps make a meal (appetizer, veggies from your garden, bean salad, grains dressed up for summer, local cheese, an entrée)

7:00-8:00-ish Showing of The Fish Belong to the People

8:00-ish-9:00-ish, Discussion with William Hyler, dessert, prize awarded to most loved dish. The prize?  An electric composter that turns kitchen waste into black gold in just two weeks.  Uses the energy of a nightlight.  Valued at $400.

Come share food that is fresh, local and real with people who are passionate about good food too (organic is best, of course).  Use ingredients from your garden or from the garden of a local farm or food producer.

Bring a dish to feed 8-10 (that means a couple brings 2 dishes because they bring 2 mouths).

Do you have to slave over a hot stove?  No.  Do simple.  A bowl of berries with local honey.  Greens drizzled with pumpkinseed oil.  Local cheese with organic crackers. We want you to come for the fun and community.

Who is William Tyler?  William writes, “Both sides of my family were born and grew up in the area near Port Clyde, Maine.  The Fish Belong to the People follows a group of family fishermen in Port Clyde, Maine as they work to save their fishing grounds from government, market structure and themselves. With each passing season their way of life has slowly been extinguished by old ways of doing business that favors the most efficient and destructive ways of fishing over sustainability.  In the last forty years fishing technology has advanced largely unchecked and without conscious attention to the preservation of the fish stocks. As a result government and big business are slowly pushing small family fishermen out in the name of conservation.  With nothing left to lose, the local fishermen of Port Clyde are trying to stay afloat by finally becoming an environmentally friendly operation. Their proactive association is developing cleaner ways of fishing by reducing their use of powerful technologies at sea… Ultimately it is the people as consumers who will put their support behind factory machines or local family owned boats.”

Judy will inform about additives some chocolatiers use to reduce costs, as well as the various certification requirements including Fair-Trade, Organic and Rainforest Alliance.

If you are interested in the chocolate-making process, rainforest conservation and the rescue of the indigenous Kichwa culture (and other cultures), this tasting is for you!   Judy suggests a donation of $5 to cover the cost of these lovely chocolates.  Please call to reserve a chair.  978-371-7573.
